Cadillac Adopts NASA Strategy to Assemble Team from Nothing for Melbourne Startline.

A little more than one year in the past at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Cadillac racing team were finally granted the go-ahead as the world of Formula One's latest entry for 2026. Constructing the organization from scratch has required a intense work rate that the principal, Graeme Lowdon, has equated to the Apollo moon landing. As the sport converges on Vegas this weekend, the team are aware the deadline is approaching.

The Tight Timeline to Melbourne

At the last event of the season to be staged in the US, with just over a hundred days to go before they hit the circuit for the maiden outing in Melbourne at the first race of 2026, the Cadillac F1 project have come on in leaps and bounds but, in what must seem like a never-ending challenge, they are conscious there will never be sufficient time.

The CTO, Nick Chester, became part of the newly formed operation in the spring of 2023 soon after it was created, when the organization were without even an official entry. He has been at its core from that point and has a wry smile when considering the experience.

“You can have a brief moment thinking back at what you have accomplished and say: ‘Incredible, how impressive what we have built in under three years,’” he says. “And then the very next instant you realize: ‘Yeah, we’ve still got quite a lot to do.’”

A One-of-a-Kind Opportunity

Chester achieved victories at Renault in Alonso's victorious seasons of the mid-2000s and was in control of technical development at the new Mercedes electric racing team, but nothing has truly matched the task of bringing the iconic American Cadillac brand, a factory team supported by the corporate entity, GM, into F1.

“Establishing an grand prix team from scratch, when are you ever going to get a chance to do that?” Chester remarks. “There's nothing comparable. In an existing team you won't have the possibility to transform team culture.”

With each day that elapses thoughts are sharper on the looming decisive point in Melbourne and targets are being managed.

“It's reasonable to expect that any incoming team joining the grid is probably going to finish last but just making it to the starting line will be an feat in itself,” the team principal noted recently and while the CTO shared this view he thought the organization had a reputation to build as well.
“Our primary goal we want to show is that we should be there,” he says. “So that we show up and we perform competently. We aim to demonstrate that this is a professional operation executing the correct procedures on the circuit. Once we have demonstrated that we are a legitimate team, then we will focus on improvement subsequently.”

Driver Lineup and Team Building Drive

In late summer they contracted Checo Pérez and Valtteri as their pilots for 2026, a tandem remarkable for their priceless expertise in performing at the front in two top-tier teams, Red Bull Racing and Mercedes, and Bottas expressed the mood of combative optimism.

“Certainly, we have a realistic outlook,” he commented. “There’s going to be a massive task to do, and it will likely be almost certainly a tough opening, because it's the top level of motorsport. But we aren't joining to remain at the rear. I believe given this organization, with this team, these people, there is every reason that we won't be able to advance swiftly to a competitive level and enjoy some success.”

To that end hiring has been in full swing, with personnel now at more than 400 and scheduled to reach the goal of 600 members swiftly. Complementing their present headquarters at the UK base, the team are in the process of building an main base at Fishers, Indiana in the Indianapolis area and there is the General Motors facility in North Carolina, where they are constructing the facility to manufacture the 2029 engine, scheduled for 2029 – until then they will run power from Ferrari – and the Toyota's wind tunnel in Cologne, Germany. It is a sophisticated structure, at odds with the movement in Formula One for more centralization, and has prompted the fresh organizational mindset to which the CTO referred to.

Space Mission Inspiration

“It's closely based on the Apollo program,” stated Lowdon just before the British Grand Prix in July. “We are pragmatic, we understand how tough it is. The schedules, are extremely compressed. Alright, we’re not putting a man on the moon, but it can seem that way.”

So they have implemented, instead of the traditional management structure, a flat management structure similar to that of the space agency's, where there were a assortment of specialist groups all working on distinct elements of the project at a multiple sites.

“When you must follow a protocol where an issue arises and they report it to their team leader, that leader communicates with a manager somewhere else, it travels back down, it’s super slow,” says the CTO. “Therefore we enable people to handle things directly. Avoiding management approval for all decisions is much smoother and quicker.”

Upcoming Challenges

The efficacy of this nimble methodology will be evaluated in the heat of competition when the season begins and there is a considerable amount riding on this for F1, too. The Cadillac team have signed as their reserve driver the young American Colton Herta
