British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
