A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
