Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to question specific rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
